Licensing

One key per firm, checked on this computer only: no account, no sign-in, no license server, nothing transmitted. The startup line under the version says who the seat is licensed to and through when, or how many trial days are left.

What the dialog shows and takes

  • This workstation, licensee, kind (annual / monthly / site), seats, and the term end; or the trial countdown.
  • Enter or replace a key, paste the whole key from the email, BEGIN / END lines and line breaks included. A key that does not verify never replaces the one already installed.
  • Key file: %APPDATA%\VDC\license.key, or the file named by the environment variable VDC_LICENSE_FILE, point every seat at one file on a share and a renewal is a single file replace.
  • Whole office, one file: save the key as license.key in the root of the deployment share. Every seat finds it, keeps a local copy for laptops off the network, and updates never touch it.
  • Buy or Renew opens the website: with a key installed, the renew page with the license already filled in (license ID, license, seat counts - no firm name or email); with no key or on a trial, the pricing page.
  • Remove Key takes the key off this workstation.
  • Email Support opens an email to Support@newrootsdevelopment.co, filled in with this workstation's version and license (also VDCSUPPORT, in the Help panel's Command Reference drop-down).

What the states mean

  • Trial, 14 days from first use with a startup notice in the last three; every tool works, and every report, table and summary is marked TRIAL, NOT FOR PROJECT USE.
  • Licensed, full use. The last 30 days of a term mention the renewal.
  • Term ended, this version covered, a version released inside your term keeps working in full after it; renewing is what lets you install newer versions.
  • Trial over, or term ended before this version, tools that create or update do not start, but every Clear / Remove / Purge path still works, so nothing the suite placed in a drawing is ever stranded. License, update, privacy and crash-report commands always run.
